How it got here

A good product that stopped being the product.

If you’ve been in liquor retail long enough, you remember when LiquorPOS was the go-to system. It was purpose-built for beverage stores, and it was good at what it did.

Then Heartland Payment Systems acquired it in 2014, and Global Payments acquired Heartland in 2016 for $4.3 billion. Inside a $30+ billion processing company, the software stopped being the product and became a way to sell payment processing. Development slowed, then stopped. Now it’s official: LiquorPOS is end-of-life, and support is winding down.

That’s not a knock on the people who built it — it’s just how the economics work when a processor owns your POS.

The stores still running it are the only ones left holding the countdown.

The LiquorPOS timeline

  • 2014 Heartland Payment Systems acquires LiquorPOS
  • 2016 Global Payments acquires Heartland for $4.3B
  • Since Development slows, then stops
  • 2026 End-of-life announced — support winding down

What end-of-life means

Running an unsupported POS is a risk you carry every day.

No drama — just what stops happening when a vendor walks away from a product.

No security updates

Vulnerabilities go unpatched — and your POS handles payment data all day long.

No compliance updates

Payment and age-check requirements keep changing; an unmaintained system quietly falls behind them.

No new features

AI, invoice scanning, smarter ordering — the industry moves on while your system stays frozen.

Support winding down

When the counter goes down on a Saturday night, there may be no one left to call.

Aging hardware, no path

Old PC hardware eventually fails — with no vendor behind the software, there’s no plan for what replaces it.

The way out is handled

We migrate LiquorPOS data — items, customers, vendors, history. Most stores are live faster than they expect.

Side by side

The comparison, in one table.

A feature-by-feature grid matters less when one side has stopped moving. Here’s what actually decides it.

Where mPower is different

Built for this category — and still being built.

Purpose-built, not adapted

Case breaks, keg deposits, age checks, distributor invoicing — native features for 15+ years, not afterthoughts. LiquorPOS started the same way; after the acquisition, its development served a processor’s priorities instead.

Your processor, your choice

LiquorPOS locked you into Heartland. mPower gives you a choice of three integrated processing partners — find a better rate and switch without replacing your POS. In a margin business, that flexibility is real money.

AI that works a liquor store

Plain-English inventory rules, automated purchase orders, invoice scanning, margin protection, a built-in assistant — years of AI investment LiquorPOS never made and now never will.

Migration, handled

We migrate LiquorPOS data — items, customers, vendors, sales history. We’ve done it enough times to know where the edge cases are. Most stores are up and running faster than they expect.
